This past summer, I was accepted as a Helene Cody Scholar Candidate, an amazing opportunity to run my own community service project!
The Helene Cody Foundation is a nonprofit organization with the mission of inspiring youth to volunteer in order to better their community. It was founded in memory of Princeton High School student Helene Cody, who spent her life volunteering and helping those in need.
Through the program, I get the opportunity to work with a mentor, attend monthly leadership meetings, meet new young people who are just as passionate about volunteering as I am, and run my own project. At the end of the academic year, I am able to present the results of my project!
Without further ado, here is a brief description of my project:
Making poor financial decisions can have costly and lasting effects on our lives. Helping children understand basic financial and economic concepts at a young age, will allow them to build a strong foundation and prepare them for handling their personal finances as they grow. My community service project involves designing and executing a program that would allow me to introduce age-appropriate financial literacy topics to students (ages 12+), in order to allow them to gain a basic understanding of what it means to be financially responsible, and expose them to an economic way of thinking. The scope of the curriculum will include a variety of foundational concepts such as budgeting, banking basics, investing, building credit, etc. which will be explained through a series of interactive workshops. I also plan on providing students with digital resources to help them navigate the world of finance after the workshops, so they are able to continue their learning and application of financial literacy concepts.
I am currently set up to run the workshop at my local libraries!
